FOB or EDM?
Ayumi Hulmes
Artist: Fall Out Boy
Album: M A N I A
Single release date: 27th April 2017
It’s certainly been a busy week for pop-punk band Fall Out Boy, as they released the first single, Young and Menace, from their upcoming album M A N I A, announced the release date of said new album, and released the tour dates for their US tour in October. Fall Out Boy are back with a new album, M A N I A, and their first single from the album. After a number of cryptic tweets from bassist Pete Wentz, the band dropped the video for the new single last Thursday, causing chaos all over Twitter, as fans listened to Fall Out Boy’s first new music since 2015.
The single wasn’t released until 1am in Japan, but of course I was awake at the time, as I had to hear their new song. Throughout the first verse, I couldn’t help but feel the song was a little slow for my liking. Then I reached the chorus. Granted, there was a large amount of EDM throughout the song, but I still loved it and had it on repeat for the days following.
However, not everyone shared the same opinion as me. In fact, there were huge numbers of fans who were commenting negatively on the song, saying how different it was to the likes of Infinity On High and Folie à Deux. Young and Menace does have quite a different sound to their old material, so if you preferred their first few albums, then maybe this album, or this song at least, won’t be your favourite. That’s not to say that it’s bad music though.
Fall Out Boy have got to be one of my all-time favourite bands, and I’m incredibly excited to see what else M A N I A has in store. In my eyes, Young and Menace is just proof to show how versatile they can be, and how brilliantly they can change their style or genre of music, without losing their core style. My only hope is that they announce international tour dates too, as I’d love to be able to see them a third time.
