Can sleep kill?
Have you ever woken up and wondered ‘Why can’t I just sleep all day?’ Well, oversleeping can sometimes be just as bad as undersleeping. Good sleep is vital to your health and helps your body to recharge and recover, ready for the next day. However, can you have too much of a good thing?
Susan Redline, Professor of sleep at Harvard college says that ‘Individuals who sleep more than 10 hours per day generally have worse health profiles than those who sleep 7 to 8 hours’.
Michael Irwin, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences also says that sleeping too much can also cause disease and long sleep (which he classifies as eight hours or more) is generally poor sleep and a result of people staying in bed too long.
Finally, research shows that oversleeping could lead to the following problems developing:
-You're at higher risk of heart disease.
-You're more likely to struggle with your weight.
-You may develop diabetes.
-Your mood can suffer.
-You're at risk of dying early.
Yet despite this, over 30% of the American population still oversleeps. Beds are just too comfortable!
