Snow Monkeys
The Japanese macaque (snow monkey) is native to Japan. They get their name “snow monkeys” because they live up in the mountains where it can snow for many months of the year. They have brown-grey fur, red faces, short tails and are known for being quite mischievous. Over the years there have been countless photos circulating around the web of these monkeys stealing various items, one of the most popular are people's mobile phones. This has lead them to be known for being very sneaky.
Last year I went to go visit them in Nagano, Hakuba. It was a long 30 minute walk from the car park to the snow monkeys. When we finally got to the site I was not disappointed, there were loads of monkeys running around chasing each other all around the place. I even got to see a mother with her two babies on her back. They certainly weren’t afraid of us and almost took notice as people were getting right up in their face to take the perfect picture on their disposable camera.
Overall I would say that it was a good experience watching the monkeys run around and playing with each other. I think this is a perfect idea for a family outing and would appeal to everyone.
