Are you one of those people who don’t believe in therapists, yoga, meditation or other things like that? Do you not believe in emotional inner help or are you never passive towards these exercises? Well, I have to say, I also question these things and I’m not very convinced straight away. However, I personally believe that after trying it, that was one of the best ways in which I could have ever helped myself.
Everyone has a moment in their lives when they get stressed, angry or under negative circumstances, and that’s normal. When getting those feelings though, most people’s first option is either medicine, sleeping or eating/drinking. People don’t tend to consider these type of exercises most of the time because they cannot feel better straight way, and they won’t, because that’s simply not how it works. Just like when you practise a sport, you won’t see improvement straight away, and that’s why you need a bit of training, and it’s the same when it comes to breathing.
People who aren't used to doing this as a habit, tend to come into that practise already thinking negatively, thinking it won't work. The whole point of Yoga and meditation is to focus on yourself and having your attention turned to yourself only, not to listen to the voices in your head or to think about other things just because you are in ‘silent mode’. Therefore, it is always good to try and be open minded if you honestly wish to get results.
Moreover, another thing that we tend to do in order not to step out of our comfort zone is to find excuses. For example, “I don’t have time to do any of that, I have lots of work to do” or “There’s is a place far from my daily route and I can’t go because I waste too much time”. Well, the good thing is that in BST, there’s a yoga ECA that runs every Friday, before school, so unless you already live extremely far away, you can probably make an effort to wake up a bit earlier once a week, and help your own well being.
There are many benefits to yoga, for example, according to the American Osteopathic Association, it can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches, and it can also lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia, which then of course, helps you perform better at school. It is important to get enough sleep so that your body can recover all the energy spent during the day, as well as strengthening your memory ability, which helps you remember everything you’ve studied on the day, and therefore you are more likely to do better on a test the next day. At last but not least, sleeping well, which is, sleeping enough hours so that your body can relax and recover its energy for the following day, will make you more willing to pay attention in the lessons and that can make you improve your focus, which can result again, in a better academic performance.
A survey including fourteen students in BST reveals the predicted results discussed before. About 65% of the students interviewed said that yoga has helped them feel less stressed and calmer, and another 7.1% that felt like yoga has helped them feel more grateful for what they already have than greedy, or wishing they would have something different. This is very important because, the more grateful we are, the happier we live, and the happier we live helps us prevent the development of diseases such as cancer, body aches or even mental disorders (according to Candice Pert PhD, Louise Hay, and Bruce Lipton PhD, who are pioneers in this scientific field of study).
Furthermore, a total of about 28.5% of these students reported feeling definitely physically and mentally better after experiencing yoga, which explains therefore why it prevents the diseases previously mentioned. Also, about 64.2% of them stated they have performed better in school after trying it, which is again, very satisfying.
Lastly, it is never too complicated to try new things, and especially for BST students, who are privileged for having so many ECAs offered by the school, there shouldn’t be anything stopping you from experimenting new activities for your own good. It is understandable that everyone has to study as a priority, or take care of different things in terms of work because we are worried about doing well. However, if don’t take a certain time to help yourself, it’s like writing multiple essays without having a break to sharpen your pencil, you won’t be able to read anything you have written.
